How to read these numbers
These values are Consumer Price Index points. They are not dollar prices, household spending totals, or percentages.
- The source sets its base period to 100 (1982-84=100). A value above 100 means the measured basket’s price level is higher than it was in that base period; a value below 100 means it is lower.
- When the index rises from one month to another, the measured basket became more expensive. When it falls, the basket became less expensive. Individual products and household costs can move differently.
- The reference month is the month the prices represent, which may be earlier than the date the source published the data.
- Source status repeats any special flag supplied by the official provider. “No special status reported” means the provider did not attach a special flag to that observation.
The latest published value is 333.918 for July 2026. Read it as an index level; use the percentage-change cards above to see how much it changed over time.
Compare with an earlier year
Move the slider to compare July in an earlier available year with the latest published observation for the same month. If a year is unavailable, the slider uses the nearest year with an exact matching month.
- Earlier index (July 2017)
- 244.786
- Latest index (July 2026)
- 333.918
- Change between those months
- 36.41%
As a simple index-based example, $100.00 at the July 2017 price level corresponds to about $136.41 at the July 2026 price level.
Both bars use the same zero baseline so their lengths can be compared directly. Exact index values appear beside the bars.

The restrained chart shows the latest twelve observations. The accessible table includes up to the latest twenty-four published months.

Methodology and limitations
Each change is (ending index − starting index) × 100 ÷ starting index, calculated with exact decimal arithmetic and rounded to two decimal places using half-even rounding.
One month, twelve months and five years use exact calendar-month offsets from the newest observation. Since-2020 uses January 2020. Missing months are reported, never interpolated.
CPI measures price change through time for a defined geography. It is not an absolute cost-level comparison between places, and indexes from different base periods must not be compared as price levels.
